To achieve their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award, pupils will need to complete 12 hours of work towards 3 key areas; Physical, Skill and Volunteering. The 12 hours are to be completed over 3 months as followed. Pupils will be expected to participate in 1 hour of physical activity a week, learn a new skill for 1 hour a week and volunteer for 1 hour a week. Each of the sections will be assessed and pupils will learn more about each area in their introduction to DofE session before half term. This introduction session will explain the types of activities pupils could use to achieve their goals in Physical, Volunteering and Skill Based development. Pupils will go home with a detailed information pack to discuss with parents.

From Easter, pupils will be taking part in training sessions both in school and offsite as part of their navigation training. Once all pupils have achieved the physical, skill based and volunteering goals and completed the training sessions, the expedition will be organised and completed in the final half term. The date for the offsite navigation training will be confirmed closer to the time.

The expedition will consist of two days walking using their navigation training and one night camping.

They will be given the following equipment:

• Tents

• Stoves, pans and fuel

• Group shelter

• Group first aid kit

• Maps

• Compasses

• Rucksack (if needed)

• Rucksack liners (if needed)

• High visibility rucksack cover

The expedition will take place on the weekend of the 11th and 12th May 2024. This will consist of two days of walking and navigating the specified route and one night of camping on the designated site which will be supervised by Tower College staff. More information will be available to parents regarding the expedition with a bespoke detailed information pack.

The practice day for this expedition will take place on April 20th. Pupils will be collected by coach and taken to Rivington where they will complete expedition activities to prepare them for the upcoming expedition.

This year we will be including additional training sessions after-school to help pupils prepare for the expedition. These sessions are included in the cost and will be running from 3:45pm until 5:15pm in school.
