Trips and Events

Finally, we were able to hold the long-awaited Prom for last year’s leavers at the Shankly Hotel in Liverpool. It was a splendid evening enjoyed by all. Year 7 too were treated to a belated fun residential trip to Colomendy. As the children missed out due to Covid, we couldn’t possibly leave them out and we all had so much fun working together on our team-building skills, resilience and leadership qualities. The children enjoyed the fun of outdoor activity and staying away from home with their friends despite the wet and windy weather that Wales had to offer!

We are already planning our next Residential trip to Culmington Manor in Shropshire. This will take place from Friday 27th March until Sunday 27th March and will be open initially to years 9-11. A ParentMail will be released in the coming days to offer spaces. Pupils will be able to take part in high ropes challenges, abseiling, water sports and plenty more outdoor activities.

Our Year 7 Bonding trip to Willersley Castle for 16th September 2022 has now been booked and a ParentMail will be sent in the coming weeks to our current Year 6 to secure their place on this exciting residential trip.

Christmas Activities

Our 12 days of Christmas was great fun, as we’re sure you’ll agree if you have viewed our social media, and although we were disappointed that Covid, yet again, interrupted our Ski-trip plans, we sprang into action to organise some fun Christmas activities closer to home that could be enjoyed across all departments.

Our Christmas Fayre proved to be a great success and enjoyed across all departments. Over £240 was donated to the Willowbrook Hospice. Zoya raised an additional £150.

Charity Ambassadors

We are looking for pupils who would like to volunteer as Charity Ambassadors. There will be a lunchtime club run by Ms Gregory and Mrs Wright held twice half termly and involves planning events and fundraisers to help within our local community. Further details will be given to pupils on our return in January.

New Behaviour Management System

January 2022 will see the launch new behaviour management system which includes a revised positive reward scheme that will run alongside our current behaviour policy and enable pupils and their parents to track pupils’ successes. Even better, accumulated house-points can be exchanged for a variety of rewards! The easy to use app will empower our pupils to take pride in each and every success along their Tower College journey. This will be in place for all of our pupils from Bluebird to Year 11.

Mrs Nugent and Mrs Riley

Sadly, Mrs Nugent left Tower College at the end of the term. Mrs Nugent will be missed not only for her outstanding teaching but also for her many contributions to the life of the school. You may remember the remarkable article that she wrote for the Spotlight Magazine and her running of the Cramner Award and Tower’s Got Talent was exceptional. We wish her all the very best in her new venture.

Fortunately, we have managed to secure the services of another outstanding English teacher in Mrs Riley. As much as Mrs Nugent will be missed, we are absolutely certain that we could not have found a more ideal replacement who will, as Mrs Nugent did, work hand in hand with Mrs Christian.

By way of further introduction, here’s Mrs Riley …

I am Mrs J Riley; it is a pleasure to E-meet you!

I would like to introduce myself to you all and share my journey into teaching.

As a former pupil of our Principal, Ms A Bingley in 1996, I am fortunate enough to have had exposure to a nourishing, caring education from a young age. I developed a strong passion for reading books of every genre and often thought of Ms Bingley in reference to the character of Miss Honey in the famous film ‘Matilda’.

As I grew, so did the size of the books I was immersed in, and before long I was studying Law at the University of Liverpool. Following the successful completion of my undergraduate degree, I took the opportunity to go travelling across the world and visit countries such as Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. On my return to the UK, I began to practice in the civil litigation sector and worked for several established law firms, including those with global recognition such as DWF LLP.

I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the school and more importantly, our fantastic pupils. I strongly believe that the impact of teachers can last a lifetime, in fact, I guess you could say that Ms Bingley and I are living proof of this statement. My aim is to inspire, challenge and nurture our pupils academically in a way that will enable them to grow into well-rounded, kind, and astute adults, in preparation for their exciting future ahead.

School Lunches

We have met with our chef, Mr Steele, to discuss parental feedback and make the necessary improvement changes. We have had a trial menu for the last three weeks and the feedback so far suggests that things have greatly improved. There will be a Pupil Voice meeting regarding food and menu options and this will give pupils the chance to contribute. There will be a pupil drop-in session on Friday 14th January at morning break in the Pupil Support Room. We will also be inviting parents to sample Chef Steele’s culinary delights. Further details will follow via ParentMail.

Access Arrangements

We have been busy organising and planning Access Arrangements for our Year 11 in preparation for their upcoming GCSE assessment series. If your child is in Year 10 and requires access arrangements for their upcoming GCSE’s Ms Gregory will contact you in the New Year to organise a meeting and to discuss the next steps in planning towards your child’s GCSE journey.

Ms Gregory will be running an Access Arrangements Drop-In Coffee morning on Thursday 13th January from 8.30am until 10.30am in Miss Oxley’s Dining Room. Please feel free to call in for a coffee and a chat should you have any questions regarding your child’s access arrangements.

Lateral Flow Tests

The DfE has recommended that all settings offer on-site lateral flow testing to their pupils on their return to school in the new year. The nursing team will be returning to Tower College on Tuesday 12th January from 9.00am to assist our pupils in Year groups 7 – 11. Please fill in the permission slip on the ParentMail that will follow in the coming weeks and complete the form for your child to take part in the lateral flow testing.

Parent Partnership

We have made tremendous progress with our curriculum provision, enrichment experiences and pupil support thanks to the hard work of our teachers, support staff and the findings of our recent inspection report. This has also happened, in no small way because of our partnerships with parents and pupils, and we are thrilled by the feedback we have recently received from you via the Parent Forum.

The Parent Forum is a partnership between parents and the school, and it is a valuable way to share ideas, views, concerns and make suggestions for improvement. Parents are afforded the
opportunity to constructively share ideas on a regular basis and comment on what the school is doing well and suggest how things could be improved upon. It is an opportunity to ensure that information is relayed in a factual, professional manner that will be documented. We invite you to email your ideas, views, concerns and suggestions to the Chairperson who will then raise them in the meeting.

We value the input of our body of parents and pupils and have some exciting opportunities upcoming this term to further our partnerships for the benefit of all pupils in our community.

Enrichment and After School Activities

We have almost completed the administration for the revised enrichment and after school programmes. We believe that, once again, Mr Southward has managed to surpass his previous broad and exciting offerings. As soon as the back-end work is completed, we will send out ParentMails inviting pupils to make their enrichment choices and parents (should they wish) to select after school clubs for their children.

We are conscious that communication is key to successful relationships, and that the relationship our teachers have with their pupils is one of the greatest strengths of Tower College. We aim to expand these values to our parent body, and details will follow in the new year of how to contact your child’s subject teachers directly, to strengthen these bonds and improve our educational provision. Mr Glover will take the lead on parental collaboration and communication, but for matters relating to curriculum areas, we would encourage you to contact your child’s subject specialist teacher.

Year 11

In response to your feedback, in the coming term, we will be offering our current year 11 cohort academic mentoring sessions, interventions and an expanded range of booster sessions, to ensure success at this critical junction in their academic careers.

We would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy Christmas and New Year.

Ms Gregory, Mr Glover and Mr Taylor
